Shooting Season Starts Again

It's spring and we're nearing the end of another school year. When I was a kid, that meant baseball, vacation, and endless summer days in which I could spend quality time with my bike. Unfortunately, now it means a spate of school shootings is likely to happen.

It typically takes only one for the trend to start. This year's might be the gruesome murder of 17 in Germany. Thirteen of them were teachers. It's the worst single massacre in Germany since the Munich Olympics.

Here in Florida, hurricane season starts in a little more than a month. There's nothing you can do about it, except wait it out and hope the damage isn't too bad. Unfortunately. this time of year is starting to engender the same attitude. #

The US Cardinals did little to satisfy anyone with their milquetoast statement after their summit with the Pope. The use of the word "notorious" incidates that they're still more concerned with keeping the Church's reputation clean than they are with protecting children in their care. Unfortunately, they don't realize that the Church's reputation has been dunked in mud by their own actions.

The US Bishops will meet in Dallas in June. Given the fact that the church is often lapped by glaciers (as fast cars lap slow cars in a race), there is hope that the Bishops will do the right thing then.

But the Church is running out of chances. If it wants to remain what it is, it had better start to treat this situation with the care and seriousness it demands. #

How would you like to be the FBI right now? No matter what they do, they're going to be criticized.

Abu Zubaydah is hinting at attacks in malls and shopping centers, reminiscent of the suicide bombings in Israel. The FBI has to disseminate the warning. They can't take the chance that Zubaydah's going to tell the truth. Imagine the uproar if they didn't and an attack came.

But if there's no attack, it's just one more alert that didn't mean anything, and one more reason for people to abuse the FBI for crying wolf. Could it be that the strategy is to discredit our alert system before the attack comes? #
